Dynamic Character Analysis in Literature
Assignment

People change. Think back to the type of person you were five years ago. Were you the same person then? Will you be the same person ten years from now? In literature, characters who change are called dynamic. Both Enkidu and Gilgamesh are dynamic characters because they are affected by the events in the story. Your assignment is to trace these changes. For EACH of the two characters, do the following....

  1. Decide how many different "versions" of the character exist.

  2. For each "version," give me two or three defining characteristics that show how this "version" is different from earlier or later versions of the same character.

  3. For each characteristic or character trait, give me a quote or action that shows the character truly has that trait.

  4. Decide what events, conflicts, or relationships caused the character to change. Find quotes or examples to support your opinion.

  5. Decide why the author had the character change. What truth about life, living, or human nature is the author trying to show you? Make one clear statement about this truth and then explain your ideas.

Remember to do TWO posters--one for Gilgamesh and one for Enkidu
